Class Reading

In our first day of class, students were presented with a number of books and selected the book the liked best! Class read a portion of the selected work aloud in class.

Five Minute Creative Writing Challenge: 

"Spartan, Viking, Knight, or Roman"

Students took 5 minutes in class to creatively write. They used a holiday themed worksheet to enhance their creative writing skills. Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization skills are not the focus of this challenge! Students have five minutes to dig deep into their creative minds and write about what they see!

      Reading and Writing Class Overview

      Objective

      Students will learn skills and tools to strengthen their writing and reading abilities. Class focus is on reading phonics, strategies, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development  writing process, text, conventions, handwriting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and research.

      Class Breakdown

      Vocabulary

      Students assigned 10 new vocabulary words each class. Vocabulary words are incorporated new into the student’s reading and writing lessons to help strengthen context, identification, spelling, meaning, and pronunciation skills. Students work on activities like word review, the 5 Minute Writing Challenge, and spelling challenges to enhance their vocabulary and spelling skills.
      Reading

      Students select from a variety of short stories and books to read aloud during class, or can select to bring their own book (BYOB). Class focuses on reading comprehension, pronunciation, and frequency. Student will answer questions from worksheets about the material they read in class to strengthen comprehension skills.

      Writing

      Students write short essay, utilizing beginning, middle, and end formation, summarizing the story they've read in class. Writing focus on spelling, punctuation, spacing, and form. Student must use vocabulary words learned in class in their writing. Graphic organizers, writing prompts, and language arts worksheets utilized to strengthen students writing skills.
